Overview

Sweden is a strong destination for PhD students — doctoral positions are funded employment (you earn a salary, not just a stipend). Master's students from outside the EU pay tuition (around SEK 80,000–140,000/year) but the Swedish Institute offers generous scholarships. Sweden's research output per capita is among the highest globally.

Scholarship culture

The Swedish Institute (SI) Scholarship is the flagship award — it covers tuition, living costs, and travel for one-year or two-year master's programmes. SI specifically prioritises students from developing countries including Africa. Competition is fierce (thousands apply for ~300 spots) but the quality-of-life during study is excellent.

Key scholarships

  • Swedish Institute Scholarship
  • SI Study Scholarships
  • Erasmus Mundus (joint degrees with Swedish universities)
  • University-specific tuition waivers

Cost of living

Stockholm is expensive: SEK 10,000–14,000/month (approx. $900–$1,300). Smaller university cities like Uppsala, Lund, or Gothenburg are cheaper. All Swedish universities have affordable student housing queues — register as early as possible.

Visa process

Residence permit for studies (not a visa). Apply via Migrationsverket. Processing takes 1–4 months. Need university acceptance, proof of funds (SEK 8,515/month without scholarship), health insurance, and passport. Register at the Swedish Tax Agency on arrival for a personal number.
