Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK)
Enables talented and motivated students from Commonwealth countries to gain qualifications and skills relevant to the development priorities of their home country, with a bias toward fields of strategic importance.
Open to citizens of Commonwealth countries (including many African nations) who hold a first-class undergraduate degree, are not already living in a developed country, and intend to return to their home country.
Citizenship of a Commonwealth country
RequiredFirst-class or high second-class undergraduate degree
RequiredNot permanently resident in a developed country
RequiredCommitment to return and contribute to home country
PreferredA competitive applicant holds a first-class or strong upper-second undergraduate degree in Law, Literature, History, Fine Arts, Linguistics, or a related Arts discipline from a recognized university in an eligible country such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh, and has not yet begun doctoral registration. They can articulate a specific research question — for example, post-colonial land tenure law in Zambia, or oral literature traditions in the Eastern Caribbean — that requires UK-based supervisory expertise or archival access unavailable at home. They have a track record of academic publication, conference presentation, or professionally relevant work such as legal practice or cultural policy roles that positions the PhD as a logical next step rather than a career pivot. Crucially, they have a plausible and concrete return plan: a faculty position offer, a civil service role, or an NGO leadership track in their home country that the doctoral credential directly enables.
