What a strong applicant looks like
A competitive applicant holds a first-class or near-perfect undergraduate record from a well-regarded institution and has already produced work — a published paper, a funded project, a policy brief adopted by a real organization — that demonstrates they can operate at the edge of their field rather than just study it. They have a specific, defensible reason for pursuing their PhD at Cambridge rather than elsewhere, ideally tied to a named supervisor or research group whose work directly extends their own. Beyond the academic record, they have held genuine leadership in a context that required them to make decisions under uncertainty and account for their impact on others — not just a committee title, but evidence of measurable outcomes. The personal statement reads as a coherent argument, not a résumé in paragraph form: it connects where they came from, what problem they have identified, why Cambridge is the right place to pursue it, and what they intend to do with the result.
